RESUMEN

This study examines online processing and offline judgments of subject-verb person agreement with a focus on how this is impacted by markedness in heritage speakers (HSs) of Italian. To this end, 54 adult HSs living in Germany and 40 homeland Italian speakers completed a self-paced reading task (SPRT) and a grammaticality judgment task (GJT). Markedness was manipulated by probing agreement with both first-person (marked) and third-person (unmarked) subjects. Agreement was manipulated by crossing first-person marked subjects with third-person unmarked verbs and vice versa. Crucially, person violations with 1st person subjects (e.g., io *suona la chitarra "I plays-3rd-person the guitar") yielded significantly shorter RTs in the SPRT and higher accuracy in the GJT than the opposite error type (e.g., il giornalista *esco spesso "the journalist go-1st-person out often"). This effect is consistent with the claim that when the first element in the dependency is marked (first person), the parser generates stronger predictions regarding upcoming agreeing elements. These results nicely align with work from the same populations investigating the impact of morphological markedness on grammatical gender agreement, suggesting that markedness impacts agreement similarly in two distinct grammatical domains and that sensitivity to markedness is more prevalent for HSs.

RESUMEN

This systematic review aims to assess and summarize the current landscape in exoskeletons and orthotic solutions developed for upper limb medical assistance, which are partly or fully produced using 3-dimensional printing technologies and contain at least the elbow or the shoulder joints. The initial search was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, and IEEEXplore, resulting in 92 papers, which were reduced to 72 after removal of duplicates. From the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria and selection questionnaire, 33 papers were included in the review, being divided according to the analyzed joints. The analysis of the selected papers allowed for the identification of different solutions that vary in terms of their target application, actuation type, 3-dimensional printing techniques, and material selection, among others. The results show that there has been far more research on the elbow joint than on the shoulder joint, which can be explained by the relative complexity of the latter. Moreover, the findings of this study also indicate that there is still a gap between the research conducted on these devices and their practical use in real-world conditions. Based on current trends, it is anticipated that the future of 3-dimensional printed exoskeletons will revolve around the use of flexible and high-performance materials, coupled with actuated devices. These advances have the potential to replace the conventional fabrication methods of exoskeletons with technologies based on additive manufacturing.

Peripheral venous catheterization is one of the most frequent nursing techniques in hospitals. It is a process that presents several risks and that can lead to harm to the patient, most of which are avoidable. Objectives: To analyze the local complications associated with peripheral venous catheterization in critically ill patients in an Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in the North of Portugal. Methodology: A prospective analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in 48 patients hospitalized in an Intensive Care Service with a peripheral venous catheter, during the month of August, to which up to 3 observations were made at the peripheral venous catheterization site, totaling 173, out of a total of 94 peripheral venous catheters. As a data collection instrument, a registration grid was used for sociodemographic, clinical data and compliance with the bundles for placement, maintenance and replacement or removal of peripheral venous catheters, Portuguese Phlebitis Scale and Portuguese Infiltration Scale, to assess the presence of complications. The study received a favorable opinion from the Ethics Committee. Results: The sample was mostly male (54.2%), with an average age of 70.13 years. 20G peripheral venous catheters were the most used (58.5%), in the upper limb (25.5% left and 23.4% right). The most frequent diagnoses on admission were infectious and parasitic diseases (33.3%) and new diseases of uncertain etiology (Covid-19) (16.7%). Local complications were observed in 11.6% of the observed peripheral venous catheters (6.3% phlebitis, 2.3% infiltrations and 2.9% obstructions), with a statistically significant association with the permanence time of the peripheral venous catheter. Conclusion: The frequency of local complications associated with peripheral catheterization in critically ill patients was found to be significant, associated with length of stay. We recommend the continuous assessment of the need for a peripheral venous catheter and its removal whenever it is no longer essential for the patient's treatment or its replacement. Conducting new studies with larger samples in the context of critically ill patients in our country.

RESUMEN

This work characterizes two alternative materials to substitute the most expensive microbial fuel cells (MFCs) components: proton exchange membrane (PEM) and cathode. Crude glycerol biodegradation was studied in MFCs using a clay cup as a PEM and activated carbon and camphor carbon mixture (CAC) as a cathode. The cathode performance was compared with Platinum on carbon cloth. Two clay cup single-chamber MFCs were operated with each cathode and fed with 2000 mg/L of crude glycerol. Electrochemical properties were characterized by linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry. Biodegradation efficiencies were estimated with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentage. MFCs with CAC showed a maximum power density of 100 mW/m2. This result was a 43.47% power response regarding MFCs with Platinum. COD removal efficiencies of 94% were achieved in 37 days for both cells. The Columbic efficiencies were 24.04% and 22.78% for the MFCs with Platinum and CAC. The economic analysis showed a cost of USD 9.97 for MFCs with CAC. This cost is five times lower than when using Platinum. MFCs utilizing clay cups and CAC showed an acceptable performance for the bioenergy production from crude glycerol biodegradation above all economic advantage in the cell cost.

RESUMEN

The present study uses EEG time-frequency representations (TFRs) with a Flanker task to investigate if and how individual differences in bilingual language experience modulate neurocognitive outcomes (oscillatory dynamics) in two bilingual group types: late bilinguals (L2 learners) and early bilinguals (heritage speakers-HSs). TFRs were computed for both incongruent and congruent trials. The difference between the two (Flanker effect vis-à-vis cognitive interference) was then (1) compared between the HSs and the L2 learners, (2) modeled as a function of individual differences with bilingual experience within each group separately and (3) probed for its potential (a)symmetry between brain and behavioral data. We found no differences at the behavioral and neural levels for the between-groups comparisons. However, oscillatory dynamics (mainly theta increase and alpha suppression) of inhibition and cognitive control were found to be modulated by individual differences in bilingual language experience, albeit distinctly within each bilingual group. While the results indicate adaptations toward differential brain recruitment in line with bilingual language experience variation overall, this does not manifest uniformly. Rather, earlier versus later onset to bilingualism-the bilingual type-seems to constitute an independent qualifier to how individual differences play out.

RESUMEN

Models on L3/Ln acquisition differ with respect to how they envisage degree (holistic vs. selective transfer of the L1, L2 or both) and/or timing (initial stages vs. development) of how the influence of source languages unfolds. This study uses EEG/ERPs to examine these models, bringing together two types of bilinguals: heritage speakers (HSs) (Italian-German, n = 15) compared to adult L2 learners (L1 German, L2 English, n = 28) learning L3/Ln Latin. Participants were trained on a selected Latin lexicon over two sessions and, afterward, on two grammatical properties: case (similar between German and Latin) and adjective-noun order (similar between Italian and Latin). Neurophysiological findings show an N200/N400 deflection for the HSs in case morphology and a P600 effect for the German L2 group in adjectival position. None of the current L3/Ln models predict the observed results, which questions the appropriateness of this methodology. Nevertheless, the results are illustrative of differences in how HSs and L2 learners approach the very initial stages of additional language learning, the implications of which are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to fight against pathogens. Among these mechanisms, pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) relies on the recognition of conserved microbe- or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs or PAMPs, respectively) by membrane-bound receptors. Indeed, PTI restricts virus infection in plants and, in addition, BRI1-associated kinase 1 (BAK1), a central regulator of PTI, plays a role in antiviral resistance. However, the compounds that trigger antiviral defences, along with their molecular mechanisms of action, remain mostly elusive. Herein, we explore the role of a fungal extracellular subtilase named AsES in its capacity to trigger antiviral responses. METHODS: In this study, we obtained AsES by recombinant expression, and evaluated and characterized its capacity to trigger antiviral responses against Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) by performing time course experiments, analysing gene expression, virus movement and callose deposition. KEY RESULTS: The results of this study provide direct evidence that exogenous treatment with recombinant AsES increases a state of resistance against TMV infection, in both arabidopsis and Nicotiana benthamiana plants. Also, the antiviral PTI response exhibited by AsES in arabidopsis is mediated by the BAK1/SERK3 and BKK1/SERK4 co-receptors. Moreover, AsES requires a fully active salicylic acid (SA) signalling pathway to restrict the TMV movement by inducing callose deposition. Additionally, treatment with PSP1, a biostimulant based on AsES as the active compound, showed an increased resistance against TMV in N. benthamiana and tobacco plants. CONCLUSIONS: AsES is a fungal serine protease which triggers antiviral responses relying on a conserved mechanism by means of the SA signalling pathway and could be exploited as an effective and sustainable biotechnology strategy for viral disease management in plants.

RESUMEN

This study uses resting state EEG data from 103 bilinguals to understand how determinants of bilingualism may reshape the mind/brain. Participants completed the LSBQ, which quantifies language use and crucially the division of labor of dual-language use in diverse activities and settings over the lifespan. We hypothesized correlations between the degree of active bilingualism with power of neural oscillations in specific frequency bands. Moreover, we anticipated levels of mean coherence (connectivity between brain regions) to vary by degree of bilingual language experience. Results demonstrated effects of Age of L2/2L1 onset on high beta and gamma powers. Higher usage of the non-societal language at home and society modulated indices of functional connectivity in theta, alpha and gamma frequencies. Results add to the emerging literature on the neuromodulatory effects of bilingualism for rs-EEG, and are in line with claims that bilingualism effects are modulated by degree of engagement with dual-language experiential factors.

RESUMEN

Ibuprofen degradation and energy generation in a single-chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) were evaluated using a bioanode fabricated from devil fish bone char (BCA) synthesized by calcination in air atmosphere. Its performance was compared with conventional carbon felt (CF). Bone char textural properties were determined by nitrogen adsorption. Before and after, the bacterial colonization on the materials was analyzed by environmental scanning electron microscopy. Energy generation was evaluated by electrochemical techniques as open-circuit potential, linear sweep voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Ibuprofen degradation was analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was measured. Results showed a specific area of 136 m2/g for BCA, having enough space to immobilize microorganisms. The micrographs confirmed the biofilm formation on the electrode materials. Over the 14 days, MFC with BCA reached a maximum power density of 4.26 mW/m2, 175% higher than CF, and an electron transfer resistance 2.1 times lower than it. This coincides with the COD removal and ibuprofen degradation efficiencies, which were 43.6% and 34% for BCA and 31.8% and 27% for CF. Hence, these findings confirmed that BCA in MFC could provide an alternative electrode material for ibuprofen degradation and energy generation.

RESUMEN

RGB digital cameras (RGB) compress the spectral information into a trichromatic system capable of approximately representing the actual colors of objects. Although RGB digital cameras follow the same compression philosophy as the human eye (OBS), the spectral sensitivity is different. To what extent they provide the same chromatic experiences is still an open question, especially with complex images. We addressed this question by comparing the actual colors derived from spectral imaging with those obtained with RGB cameras. The data from hyperspectral imaging of 50 natural scenes and 89 paintings was used to estimate the chromatic differences between OBS and RGB. The corresponding color errors were estimated and analyzed in the color spaces CIELAB (using the color difference formulas ΔE*ab and CIEDE2000), Jzazbz, and iCAM06. In CIELAB the most frequent error (using ΔE*ab) found was 5 for both paintings and natural scenes, a similarity that held for the other spaces tested. In addition, the distribution of errors across the color space shows that the errors are small in the achromatic region and increase with saturation. Overall, the results indicate that the chromatic errors estimated are close to the acceptance error and therefore RGB digital cameras are able to produce quite realistic colors of complex scenarios.

RESUMEN

The baseline conditions for a particular river or stream type are essential to classify aquatic ecosystems based on physical and biological characteristics. In this study, we proposed a river typology for different ecoregions, climate and topography of northwestern Argentina using parameters, and combined key variables to establish reference conditions. A set of geographical, hydro-morphological, hydrological, geological (pedology and sedimentology) and physicochemical variables were measured from different rivers and analyzed with clustering and ordination techniques to develop a typology. We analyzed the correspondence of the physical river conditions and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages using non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis, dissimilarity among assemblages, ANOSIM approach and envfit analysis in order to make an ecological validation of the classification. Our results allowed us to classify the neotropical rivers studied, according to typological systems adapted from the European Water Framework Directive. The combination of ecoregions and topography along with other variables associated (system B), was better corresponded with biological arrangements. Hence, ecoregions and topography combined turned out to be more precise as a criterion to define river types and their local abiotic and biotic reference conditions. Macroinvertebrate distribution corresponded with the classifications proposed and was related with abiotic features of the rivers. The physical variables as altitude, grain size, water temperature and turbidity were key parameters to develop a schematic model to define river types that could be implemented and tested in other countries of the region. Five river types have been identified, characterized, and included in three large groups: Mountains, Foothills, and Lowlands (Plains). Our results showed that topography and climate are two aspects that strongly influence South American freshwater biota. We propose the schematic model developed in our study as a baseline to define freshwater biomes based on altitude (topography), ecoregions (climate) and biological functional traits at a broad spatial scale (continental or global).

ABSTRACT Dislocations and perilunar fractures-dislocations are an infrequent entity (approximately 5% of post-traumatic injuries of the wrist). The most common event is that the distal row of the carpus is located dorsally with respect to the lunate. If there is an associated fracture, the most affected bone will be the scaphoid, at the height of the middle third and with a transverse line. These lesions often go unnoticed, hence the importance of studying them, reason for which it was decided to present the case of a 21-year-old patient, attended at the Hospital de Cienfuegos, for severe pain in the wrist after suffering a fall. The closed reduction of the dislocation was performed by the Tavernier maneuver and percutaneous fixation of the scaphoid fracture with two Kirschner wires. The scaphoid synthesis was maintained for eight weeks and the immobilization was withdrawn at 12 weeks after consolidation of the scaphoid fracture.

RESUMEN

Chitin was extracted from Polybius henslowii, a swimming crab, captured in large quantities throughout the Portuguese coast by purse seine vessels as bycatch. After standard chitin extraction procedures, water-soluble chitosan products were obtained via two different methods: (1) N-acetylation with the addition of acetic anhydride and (2) a reaction with hydrogen peroxide. The chemical structure and molecular weight of chitosan derivatives, water-soluble chitosan (WSC) and chitooligosaccharides (COS), were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Antioxidant and metal chelation activities were evaluated, and the growth inhibition capacity was tested on four phytopatogens. The chitooligosaccharides from pereopods (pCOS) and shell body parts (sCOS) inhibited all fungal species tested, particularly Cryphonectria parasitica with 84.7% and 85.5%, respectively. Both radical scavenging and antifungal activities proved to be dose-dependent. Chitooligosaccharides with a low molecular weight (2.7, 7.4, and 10.4 Kg·mol-1) showed the highest activity among all properties tested. These results suggested that chitosan derivatives from P. henslowii raw material could potentially be used against phytopathogens or as ingredient in cosmetics and other products related to oxidative stress.

The work focuses on the intervention that rehabilitation nurse specialist develops in the process of preparation for discharge and consequent homecare in people undergoing orthopedic surgery, specifically in total hip arthroplasty. The fastest return to home, which isn't intended to be precocious, in the sense that all the conditions for it aren't met, but that it is effective, is increasingly a concern of health professionals. There is a greater focus on health impact issues and the health/disease transition process, with increased concern, attention and sensitivity on the part of nurses, particularly rehabilitation nurses specialists, for all factors related to a rapid recovery and involving the least possible impact on the person and family. It was possible to develop a reflection on the added value of health care provided in a continuous, seamless manner, in which the hospital is linked to care in the community and attentive to the care that people need at home, which in turn are anticipated by the hospital in the period before the hospitalization itself, creating a dynamic, attention-grabbing, professionally developed and holistic circuit. Taking into account the mentioned characteristics, it is essential to mention the added value that rehabilitation nurse specialist represents in the implementation/development of this process, both in coordination/management and in direct intervention with the person/caregiver/family, knowledge of the realities, capacity to intervene in any of the means, both hospital and community, combined with the technical and scientific knowledge allow this professional to assume as a differentiated and excellence professional.
